626) Sarah Lincoln Grigsby

Courtesy of A Mighty Girl

"I remember the night she died. My mother was there at the time. She had a strong voice, and I heard her calling her father. He went after a doctor, but it was too late. They let her lay too long." -Sarah’s Neighbor at the Time of Her Death

626: Sarah Lincoln Grigsby

Abraham Lincoln’s Elder Sister

Born: 10 February 1807, Elizabethtown, Kentucky, United States of America

Died: 20 January 1828, Dale, Indiana, United States of America

Sarah’s mother was Nancy Lincoln. Both Sarah and Abraham would attend a basic ABC school, and from her mother Sarah learned to make soap, cook over an open fire, and spin wool. When her mother died in 1818, Sarah had to help prepare her body for burial. When Nancy died, Sarah was suddenly placed in charge of taking care of the household. Sarah, all of eleven years old, now had to help care for her younger brother, eighteen-year-old orphaned cousin, and her father.

When Thomas, Sarah and Abraham’s mother, remarried to Sarah Bush Lincoln, the two Sarah’s were able to share the household chores. Throughout the rest of her teenage years, Sarah was able to infrequently attend several schools, continuing on her education to a degree.

In 1826, Sarah married Aaron Grigsby. Nine months after the wedding, Sarah announced she was pregnant.

Sarah died in childbirth, trying to bring her first child into the world. The baby passed away as well.

Sarah is buried with her baby in her arms.

Both Sarah and Nancy’s deaths were just the beginning of the numerous family members Abraham would have to bury in his life.

625: Sarah Bush Lincoln

Abraham Lincoln’s Beloved Stepmother

Born: 13 December 1788, Hardin County, Kentucky, United States of America (Present-day Elizabethtown, Kentucky, United States of America)

Died: 12 April 1869, Coles County, Illinois, United States of America

Sarah married her first husband in 1806, but he wasn’t all that great with money. He appeared on a delinquent tax roll the same year Sarah and he married. When he died in 1812, Sarah was left with three small children and no money to raise them with.

In 1819, a recently widowed Thomas Lincoln, Abraham Lincoln’s father, traveled to Kentucky from Indiana to marry Sarah. They knew each other previously when both were living in Kentucky, and the marriage was one of convenience rather than love, at least at the outset. The pair wed on December 2nd, and soon after Sarah and her three children returned to Indiana with Thomas to join Abraham and his sister Sarah (the future Sarah Lincoln Grigsby).

Sarah encouraged her stepson Abraham to become as educated as he could. Sarah herself never learned to read or write, unlike Abraham's birth mother Nancy Lincoln who was literate. Sarah only owned one book, the family Bible, and she encouraged Abraham to read from it every night to further his education. She was always very kind to him; publicly mourning his death once it was announced in 1865. The last time she had seen her stepson in person was the first of February 1861, when he stopped by her homestead before moving to the White House.

As of 2020, there is a health center in Coles County, Illinois, named in honor of Sarah Bush Lincoln.

547) Sarah Anzick

Courtesy of Johns Hopkins University Montana

“It took your breath away when you realized what it was that you were looking at. It was beautiful to me and very precious.”

547: Sarah Anzick

Molecular Biologist at the National Institute of Health

Born: c.1966, Montana, United States of America

When Sarah was two years old, the remains of a 12,600-year-old male toddler were found on her family’s ranch (later known as Anzick-1—the only known Clovis burial site).

Today, Sarah uses genetics to study allergies, immunology, and infectious diseases.

Sarah also participated in the Human Genome Project. She was featured on an episode of PBS’s Nova entitled: Great Human Odyssey in October of 2016.

Numerous Names Collection

This page categorizes the names of men and women who have popped up most throughout my research. While it seems to be a running joke in some schools that each grade has four Mary's, in this case, I've identified that to be a historical fact more than an outlier. The most popular names I've identified are: Alice, Ann, Barbara, Catherine, Elizabeth, Hannah, James, Jane, Jean, Joan, John, Joseph/Josephine, Julia/Julian, Margaret, Maria, Mary, Rebecca, Rose, Sara, William.

If you spot a name under the list that clearly isn't the same name (Take Nancy Reagan for Example), that's because their born given name was the name under the heading.

162) Sarah Edmonds

Union Soldier During the War Between the States

Born: December 1841, Magaguadavic, New Brunswick, Canada

Died: 5 September 1898, La Porte, Texas, United States of America

Also Known As: Franklin Thompson

Sarah had a rough childhood with her father resenting her because he wanted a boy. Sarah left home to escape her father and an arranged marriage—emigrating to the United States from her native Canada.

She moved to Connecticut and decided to pose as a man named Franklin Thompson to better hide from her father.

Sarah enlisted into Michigan’s 2nd Infantry in May of 1861. During the war she served as a hospital attendant, mail carrier, and possibly as a spy (though this has yet to be confirmed).

At the Battle of Williamsburg, she served as an actual fighter firing her gun but also as a stretcher bearer carrying wounded off the field.

She was wounded at the Second Battle of Manassas but managed to hang in there. In the spring of 1863, she contracted Malaria and deserted the army—fearing what would happen if she were discovered as female.

Sarah published a memoir of her experienced in 1864 and worked as a nurse (as her actual self-Sarah) for the rest of the war.

She married and had three children and in 1876 attended a reunion where her fellow soldiers greeted her warmly and agreed to help her get her desertion charge expunged and receive her military pension.

After an eight-year battle Congress approved her pension (making her the only woman to receive a veteran’s pension from the War Between the States) and expunged Franklin Thompson’s desertion charge.

In 1897 she was admitted into and became the only female member of the Grand Army of the Republic.

Sarah's story was featured on an episode of Monumental Mysteries entitled "St. Urho, Mystery Castle, Bat Bombs".

Why Are We Not Even Considering Her to be On Our New $20 Bill?

Born: 23 December 1867, Delta, Louisiana, United States of America

Died: 25 May 1919, Irvington, New York, United States of America

Original Name: Sarah Breedlove.

Entrepreneur and businesswoman who overcame impossible odds to be the first self-made female millionaire in the United States (And should therefore be on the $20 bill and not Harriet Tubman but what do I know?!).

In 1905 she invented her own line of hair-care products aimed towards African American women. Sarah opened her own factory in 1908 and by 1910 her profits were well in the millions by today’s currency.

She is also remembered for hiring “Walker Agents” (Think African American Avon Ladies—but better). Her daughter A’Lelia also worked in the company.

Sarah became a philanthropist for several communities to better the lives of African Americans throughout the United States and was a prominent member of the Harlem Renaissance.

She was the first member of her family to be born free—the fifth child to recently freed slaves but she became an orphan at the age of seven. When she was fourteen Sarah married and gave birth to a daughter—A’Lelia—to escape her oppressive home life.

Her husband died two years later so Sarah and A’Lelia made their way to St. Louis to be near Sarah’s brothers. While there Sarah was able to send A’Lelia to school and attend night classes of her own—she also met her second husband Charles there.

Sarah died from hypertension at the age of fifty-one.

Her home would become a national historic landmark in 1976.

In 2020, Netflix announced a limited series based on Madam CJ's Walker's life. Entitled "Self Made", the show is set to premiere in March of 2020. The trailer for which is linked to the left. Sarah is played by Octavia Spencer.  I have also included a behind the scenes clip of the show, in which the actors and crew speak on the enduring legacy of Madam CJ.

23) Sarah “Sally” McCoy

Her pain is still gripping over one hundred years after the fighting ended

Born: 1829, Pike County, Kentucky, United States of America

Died: 1890, Pike County, Kentucky, United States of America

Sally was a mother of sixteen children and her husband was Old Randall; leader of the McCoy clan during the Hatfield v McCoy feud (and they were first cousins—Sarah’s maiden name was McCoy).

One of her daughters was Roseanna—doomed to carry Johnse Hatfield’s illegitimate child, Roseanna would name that child after her mother Sarah. Another of Sally's children was Alifair, who was murdered by the Hatfield Clan while attempting to put out her burning house. Sally was brutally beaten and suffered from several broken ribs and possibly a skull fracture in that attack.

Just like Levicy Hatfield, Sally’s husband Randall has a Wikipedia page but Sally herself does not. It is very difficult to trudge up any information about Sally, and her life story remains mostly elusive outside of the events of the feud.

If the History Channel miniseries is to be believed Sally had a hard life and an even harder time accepting the damage wrought to her family by the feud. The trailer is linked in this article.

A play was created in 2014 about her life story.
