343) Marsha P Johnson

343: Marsha P Johnson

Transwoman and LGBT+ Activist From The 1960’s to The 1990’s in New York City

Born: 24 August 1945, Elizabeth, New Jersey, United States of America

Died: 6 July 1992, Greenwich Village, New York, United States of America

Marsha was also an HIV/AIDS Awareness and Education Advocate.

Today she is most remembered for her participation in the Stonewall Riots, which are largely seen as the beginning of the public’s participation and recognition of the fight for LGBT+ Rights, especially for those in the Trans community.

Marsha’s body was found floating in the Hudson River after the 1992 Pride Parade and the NYPD ruled it a suicide—however support from friends and fans got the NYPD to reopen the case in 2012 as a possible homicide—the case remains open.

Netflix released a documentary about her case, which is narrated and spearheaded by a fellow Trans activist who knew Marsha when she was alive. You can view the trailer to the left.

In 2019, New York announced Marsha would be honored alongside fellow activist Sylvia Rivera with a permanent monument in Greenwich Village, just down the street from the Stonewall Inn.

342: Catterina Vizzani

Italian Woman Who Disguised Herself as a Man

Born: c.1718, Rome, Italy

Died: 1743, Italy

Alternate Name: Giovanni Bordoni

Catterina was known in her time for seducing and having affairs with multiple women (and remember, most still thought she was a man at the time).

She ended up seducing the daughter of a vicar and tried to take the girl to Rome to be married. They were caught and Catherine (as she’s also been called) was wounded—she eventually died from her wounds.

On her deathbed she told a nun of her true gender and was buried in women’s clothing and celebrated as a woman who died for her virginity (which is confusing seeing as she was known for having affairs with other women, but in any case…)

The surgeon who inspected her body after she died ended up writing a book about her life which was translated to English in 1751—the first known English writing studying female homosexuality. You can purchase the book on Amazon, linked below.

341: Phillis Wheatley

The First Published African American Female Poet

Born: c.1753, Senegal (Or Gambia, The Exact Location is Disputed)

Died: 5 December 1784, Boston, Massachusetts, United States of America

Phillis was a slave and simultaneously one of the best-known poets of her time, writing around 145 poems in her lifetime.

After being purchased to work as a domestic slave, her mistress realized just how bright Phillis was, and while not actually freeing her from all of her duties, had her educated in the classics and taught her to read and write.

She was eventually freed and watched her entire family (the people who had owned her) die in quick succession. With her newfound freedom, Phillis married a free black man with entrepreneurial hopes, despite misgivings from her friends.

Phillis died alone at the young age of around thirty-one; her husband was in debtor’s prison at the time and their three children died before her (with one source claiming she died from complications of childbirth).

Phillis’s works were used by abolitionists as proof that people of African descent could be artistic and intellectual (and therefore should not be held in bondage).

Phillis is also credited with being the first to claim the United States as Columbia; a nickname often used throughout history--whether it be the Columbia expedition or the large masted ship at Disneyland today.
