692) Moana Pozzi

Courtesy of IMDb

692: Moana Pozzi

Italian Pornographic Actress and Politician

Born: 27 April 1961, Genova, Italy

Died: 15 September 1994, Lyon, France

Original Name: Anna Moana Rosa Pozzi

Moana first became a household name for Italians after she was fired from working on a children’s television program. The producers of the show realized she had done porn and fired her. After that, Moana’s popularity skyrocketed. She went on to appear in over 100 films.

She co-founded The Party of Love (Partito dellAmore) with her friend and partner in many of her films—the party was organized to push for a legalization of brothels, better sex education, and opening “love parks”. Moana went on to run for the office of Mayor of Rome (but lost the race). She did manage to rake in 1% of the vote, which is still impressive considering!

Moana died from liver cancer. However, in the months after her death, rumors abounded. Some claimed she died from AIDS related complications, others that it was a political hit job by a prominent politician she’d had an affair with. Others still claimed Moana faked her death in order to leave porn and politics behind. In 2005, the Italian government reopened the investigation into her death, but concluded what was originally decided, that she had passed from liver cancer.

The 2016 Disney film Moana had to be released under a different name in Europe because of Moana’s name still being so well known twenty years after she died. Throughout most of Europe both the film and the character are named Vaiana. In Italy, the film was called Oceania.

691) Susan La Flesche Picotte

Courtesy of Smithsonian National Anthropological Archives new

“We who are educated have to be pioneers of Indian civilization. We have to prepare our people to live in the white man’s way, to use the white man’s books, and to use his laws if you will only give them to us. The white people have reached a high standard of civilization, but how many years has it taken them? We are only beginning; so do not try to put us down, but help us to climb higher. Give us a chance.”

-Susan's Salutatorian Graduation Address

691: Susan La Flesche Picotte

The First Native American to Receive a Medical Degree

Born: 17 June 1865, Omaha Reservation, Nebraska Territory, United States of America (Present-day Cuming County, Nebraska, United States of America)

Died: 15 or 18 September 1915, Walthill, Omaha Reservation, Nebraska, United States of America

Susan decided to attend medical school and become a physician after she watched a Native woman die because the white doctor refused to give her any care.

She was the daughter of the Omaha Chief Iron Eye (Joseph La Flesche) and his wife One Woman (aka Mary). Iron Eye was the last recognized chief of the Omaha. Her sister was Susette La Flesche, who was remarkable in her own right.

Susan first attended a school specifically designed to train and educate African American and Native American students. She graduated after two years as salutatorian, and then her battle to attend medical school began.

Susan couldn't afford to go to medical school on her own, and so all her expenses were covered by the US Department of the Interior and private donations. Susan was also the first Native American student to receive federal aid (from the US Department of the Interior) to attend a professional school.

Susan graduated from medical school after only two years of study at the top of her class. At the time, the average medical student was in school for three years.

After graduation and a year’s internship in Philadelphia, Susan returned to the Omaha Reservation and tended to over 1,200 people. She eventually opened a private practice, married, raised two sons, and nursed her husband through a terminal illness.

In 1906, Susan was the leader of a delegation to Washington DC, lobbying for temperance and the prohibition of alcohol on her reservation.

Susan’s dream was realized in 1913, when she was able to open a hospital on the reservation. She passed away two years later.

Beginning in 1989, the building was renovated as a museum in her honor.

After the bankruptcy filing was announced, customers across the world voiced concerns that their genetic data would be sold to third party bidders. Twenty-seven states and the District of Columbia all filed lawsuits against the company in order to stop 23andMe from doing just that.

In June 2025, news broke that Anne's nonprofit company, TTAM Research Institute, would be purchasing the vast majority of 23andMe and also protect the customer information with the purchase. According to the news release about the sale, TTAM will be acquiring 23andMe for $305 Million.

Time will tell if such a thing is actually true.

In May 2025, Tiffany and her husband welcomed a baby boy named Alexander. Baby Alexander is President Trump's eleventh grandchild.
