Ever Wondered Why the Mothers Always Die?

Born: 22 April 1868, Steuben, Ohio, United States of America

Died: 26 November 1938, North Hollywood, California, United States of America

Walt and Roy’s Mother

She was a mother to five total and a grammar school teacher.

Some believe the reason why so many Disney protagonists have their mother's die is because of the enormous guilt Walt felt for his own mother’s death. He bought a home for his parents as a way to thank them for everything, but the radiator leaked—his father survived the carbon monoxide poisoning but Flora would pass away from complications.

More Than a Zookeeper

Born: 8 April 1897, Warsaw, Russian Controlled Poland (Present-day Warsaw, Poland)

Died: 26 July 1974, Warsaw, Soviet Controlled Poland (Present-day Warsaw, Poland)

He was the director of the Warsaw Zoo, which was one of the largest and finest zoological facilities in Europe by the 1930's. However, at the outbreak of World War II, much of the zoo was destroyed in bombing raids. Many of the animals were killed or taken to Germany, leaving the zoo in ruins.

Alongside his directorial duties Jan was also an author on various biological studies. He also produced popular radio shows.

Once the Warsaw Ghetto was established, Jan and his wife stepped in to help. Jan was able to enter the ghetto and he helped get many children and adults out through various means of smuggling. The Jews would hide in abandoned animal cages or around the property until a more permanent hiding place could be established.

Jan also supported the Polish Underground and was an active member in the Ghetto Uprising in Warsaw. He was taken prisoner because of his activities.

In 1965, Yad Vashem named Jan and Antonina Righteous Among The Nations for their activities during the war.

His and his wife Antonina's story first came to light with the publishing of the book The Zookeeper's Wife. Their story became even more widely known after a movie by the same name was released. The trailer is posted in this article if you are interested.

Don't Mess With Historians Y'all

Born: 15 August 1955, Haarlem, Netherlands

Robert is one of the world's leading experts on Auschwitz. I was introduced to his work in the amazing film Denial starring Rachel Weisz, and my respect for him grew after reading the book by fellow historian Deborah E. Lipstadt. View the trailer for the film here in this article.

Robert has written on the subject and was also responsible for chairing the group that created the master plan for the future of the museum at Auschwitz. He was also one of the four renowned historians to testify at Deborah Lipstadt's trial (see the trailer linked in the article or read the book, I'll link it below).

Robert received his PhD from the University of Leyden in the Netherlands.

He has written seven works in his own right and contributed to over twenty other books. Robert is a professor and now lives and works in Canada.

The Other Woman...Kind Of

Born: August 1865, Pike County Kentucky, United States of America

Died: 1901, Pinsonfork, Kentucky, United States of America

One of the McCoy clan during the infamous Hatfield vs McCoy feud.

She was first married to Johnse Hatfield—after he got her first cousin Roseanna pregnant (and refusing to marry her). Nancy was not a child of the main McCoy family but rather a cousin—however she was still involved in the mess.

Nancy started seeing Franklin Phillips while they were both married to other people and ended up living together two years before their divorces came through; allowing them to marry one another.

Nancy would have seven children between her two husbands.

I cannot remember off the top of my head if Nancy is given a part in the History Channel miniseries about the feud, but I linked the trailer here in this article just in case.

25) Alan Turing

Brilliant Doesn't Even Begin to Describe Him

Born: 23 June 1912, London, United Kingdom

Died: 7 June 1954, Wilmslow, Cheshire, United Kingdom

Today Alan is known as the Founder of Computer Science, though he wasn't known that way in his own lifetime.

He struggled in school and dealing with his family's demands on him, but he soon found solace in the sciences and a boy a year older than him named Christopher. The impact of Christopher and Alan's relationship was profound, and only became even more so by Christopher's untimely death in 1930. For at least the next three years, Alan spent his time positing the relationship between the mind, death, and matter itself (deeply philosophical stuff that hurts my head to think about).

I'll be honest with you from the get-go. Most of Turing's work is far too complex for my brain to understand--I am a Humanities Brain not a Mathematical one. Basically, Turing invented something called the Turing Machine which is the basis of modern computers.

During World War II, he was a part of the secret team of British codebreakers gathered to crack the German Enigma Code. They worked at Bletchley Park. His work there has been chronicled in the 2014 Film starring Benedict Cumberbatch: The Imitation Game, I've linked the trailer in this article.

While working at Bletchley Park Alan did in fact propose to Joan Clarke, but he later told her the truth. He could not marry her because he was homosexual.

In March of 1952, Alan was arrested and went to trial after it came to light that he'd had a sexual relationship with another man in Manchester. Instead of using a "defense" or claiming he was innocent, Alan instead decided to tell the truth--there was nothing wrong with what he had done and there was nothing wrong with being gay.

Instead of going to prison Alan opted for injections for a year that would lower his libido, chemical castration. Around this time Alan also had his security clearance revoked as "known homosexuals" were not allowed clearance.

He was found dead after ingesting cyanide. Alan's mother believed it was accidental, but the coroner deemed it was suicide.

In July of 2019 it was announced that Alan will be featured on the £50 banknote in the United Kingdom, the note will enter circulation in 2021.

25) Roseanna McCoy

This Love Story is Worse Than Romeo and Juliet

Born: 21 March 1859, Pike County, Kentucky, United States of America

Died: 1889, Ashford, Kentucky, United States of America

One of the daughters of the main McCoy clan in the Hatfield vs McCoy feud (Old Randall and Sarah).

Roseanna was disowned by her family after she became pregnant with Johnse Hatfield’s baby but Johnse refused to marry her—leaving her alone.

She still saved his life—alerting Johnse’s father Devil Anse that he’d been captured by her family which further distanced her from the McCoy faction.

Johnse and Roseanna's daughter Sarah would die in infancy at around eight months old.

Roseanna died soon after—consumed by her guilty conscience.

Johnse would marry her cousin Nancy and have three children with her.

In 1949 a Hollywood film named Roseanna McCoy premiered centering around her story

The History Channel also created a miniseries surrounding the feud. You can view the trailer for it, linked in this article.

Here's Definitive Proof Evil Doesn't Necessarily Run in Families

Born: 9 March 1895, Berlin, Imperial Germany (Present-day Berlin, Germany)

Died: 20 December 1966

He has been called "The Good Brother". Unlike his older brother (you can guess by the last name--I won't type it here), Albert was a decent person who saw what the Nazi Regime was and decided to do something about it.

Albert has been likened to Oskar Schindler, and there is a grain of truth in that regard. Both used their contacts and connections with Nazi Elites to save innocent Jews during the Shoah.

As soon as the Nazis began their rise to power, Albert became an outspoken critic of them. He openly spoke out against them and what they were doing. At the time, Albert had been hiding in safety in Austria, but after the Nazis marched in and took over the country, Albert's older brother protected him despite knowing what Albert was like.

Quickly, Albert sprang into action and began pulling together travel documents and other papers the Jews in Vienna needed to escape. He even forced his brother to ensure the safety of a famous composer's Jewish wife. At times Albert went as far as to sign names posing as his brother (he simply signed them with their last name, alternately spelled Goering, and people would assume it was from his brother).

His influence went beyond papers though. He also appealed to his brother's giant ego, telling him to free Jews from Concentration Camps to prove he was big and powerful enough to do it. There were around 100 people freed from the camps in this way.

Albert was arrested by the Gestapo on several occasions, but his big brother was always there to bail him out.

Later on in the war, Albert again saved many workers at a Czech factory he was put in charge of. He also protected Czech resistance fighters from arrest and deportation.

Albert's brother was found guilty of war crimes at Nuremburg and sentenced to hang, but he committed suicide before his execution could take place. Albert promised to take care of his sister-in-law and niece.

Despite all the good he had done, Albert was imprisoned for two years after the war simply because of his association with his brother. He lived out the rest of his life ostracized for his name, and the people he helped survived in turn helped him. Albert married several times, one of which produced his daughter Elizabeth. However, Elizabeth and her mother moved to Peru when she was still a child and Albert never saw her again, nor did he answer any of her letters.

Notes:

It has been speculated (and is most likely true but never confirmed) that Albert's biological father was the man who served as his godfather in life. Albert's mother and this man had an affair, and everyone noted how similar Albert looked to him. This is important because this man, who may have been his father, was half-Jewish.

Matriarch of the Powerful Hatfield Clan during America's Bloodiest Feud

Born: 20 December 1842, Pike County, Kentucky, United States of America

Died: 15 March 1929, Logan County, West Virginia, United States of America

Devil Anse’s Wife and the matriarch of the Hatfield family of the famed Hatfield vs McCoy Feud.

Levicy does not have a Wikipedia page but her husband does (just like Sally McCoy and her husband).

She would have thirteen children with her husband and even though not much is known about her you must recognize she was a strong woman who supported her husband and family through all the craziness of the feud and the fallout.

Levicy outlived her husband by eight years before dying from complications with pneumonia.

The History Channel created a miniseries of the feud. The trailer is linked in this article.

23) Sarah “Sally” McCoy

Her pain is still gripping over one hundred years after the fighting ended

Born: 1829, Pike County, Kentucky, United States of America

Died: 1890, Pike County, Kentucky, United States of America

Sally was a mother of sixteen children and her husband was Old Randall; leader of the McCoy clan during the Hatfield v McCoy feud (and they were first cousins—Sarah’s maiden name was McCoy).

One of her daughters was Roseanna—doomed to carry Johnse Hatfield’s illegitimate child, Roseanna would name that child after her mother Sarah. Another of Sally's children was Alifair, who was murdered by the Hatfield Clan while attempting to put out her burning house. Sally was brutally beaten and suffered from several broken ribs and possibly a skull fracture in that attack.

Just like Levicy Hatfield, Sally’s husband Randall has a Wikipedia page but Sally herself does not. It is very difficult to trudge up any information about Sally, and her life story remains mostly elusive outside of the events of the feud.

If the History Channel miniseries is to be believed Sally had a hard life and an even harder time accepting the damage wrought to her family by the feud. The trailer is linked in this article.

A play was created in 2014 about her life story.
