333) Lady Jeanette Churchill

333: Jeanette Churchill

She was so much more than Winston’s Mother

Born: 9 January 1854, Brooklyn, New York, United States of America

Died: 9 June 1921, London, United Kingdom

Also Known As: Jennie Jerome or Lady Randolph Churchill

Jennie was one of the women referred to as a “Million Dollar American Princess” meaning her family had money and wanted an aristocratic title so they married her off into the British Aristocracy (her father was known as the King of Wall Street in his time). She would have two sons with her first husband, the famous Prime Minister Winston, and John Strange Spencer.

Jennie became the Duchess of Marlborough thanks to her marriage and while never politically active she was an outspoken opponent of the Women’s Right to Vote—meaning she and her son Winston were often heckled by Suffragettes.

During the Second Boer War, Jennie bought and commissioned The Maine—a 200 bed hospital ship for the United States.

After her first husband’s death she became tabloid fodder marrying twice more and taking numerous lovers (including two kings). Jennie was also scandalous for being one of the few high society women to have a tattoo, hers was of a snake coiled around her left wrist.

A TV Miniseries about her life was made in 1974, entitled Jennie: Lady Randolph Churchill.

For anyone curious, Jennie’s cousin was the founder of quaint mining town Jerome, Arizona, in the United States of America.

330: Lillie Langtry

Scandal? We Know Her Well

Born: 13 October 1853, St. Saviour, Jersey, United Kingdom

Died: 12 February 1929, Monte Carlo, Monaco

Original Name: Emilie Charlotte Le Breton

Lillie was a stage actress known as the Jersey Lily.

She was the first of London's society ladies to ever appear on stage (which caused quite a scandal).

Lillie was twice married and was a mistress of the prince of Wales before he became Edward VII.

Alongside her acting career, Lillie also operated a successful horse racing stable. In 1887, she earned US citizenship after realizing Americans were a more receptive audience. Lillie also purchased a 6,500-acre estate in California, where she raised horses and operated a winery. It was there Lillie married a man nineteen years her junior.

Lillie was admired throughout her life for her beauty and gave birth to an illegitimate daughter—which is what launched her acting career in the first place. The father of the baby was never confirmed, but many believe it was Prince Louis of Battenberg, who would go on to marry Princess Victoria (Queen Victoria’s granddaughter). The baby was left with Lillie’s mother, and allegedly she had no idea Lillie was her mother until the night before her wedding.

328: Maria Milagro de Hoyas

Her body was stolen and manipulated by a crazed psycho—and when you Google her name a Wikipedia page for him comes up!

Born: 31 July 1909, Key West, Florida, United States of America

Died: 25 October 1931, Key West, Florida, United States of America

Also Known As: Elena de Hoyas

There is hardly any Google results for Elena other than photos of what happened to her.

So, what happened?

Elena, as she was better known, fell ill with tuberculosis and the aforementioned psycho doctor was the doctor who tried to save her life. When she died, he went nutso. Apparently, he was “in love” with her (more like obsessed) and so he did the natural thing; stole her body and became equally obsessed with preserving her remains and preventing decay. Over the years (yes, years!) the doctor replaced piece after piece of her as Elena’s body slowly decomposed.

Finally, someone noticed something was up, and the doctor was arrested for tomb desecration (according to sources, body snatching was not illegal in Florida at the time. Thanks Florida).

But Elena still didn’t receive justice. Why? Oh, well, the statute of limitations for the crime had passed and so there was nothing they could do, other than take away what was left of Elena for a proper burial (after she was put on display and 7,000 people came to see her body).

To learn more about Elena’s story, watch Ask a Mortician’s video linked in this article.

Notes:

  1. Some sources state that the horrible doctor may have tried to...consummate his relationship with Elena after her death. However, other sources say this information wasn't uncovered until 1972 and might be fake. I didn't include it in the original article because I'm sincerely hoping it was fake, but included it here in case any of you looked at the sources and wondered.
  2. Why have I refused to use the doctor’s name when literally every other source on the internet uses it, you may ask? Well, the same reason I refuse to use the name of anyone who committed rape or murder or any other heinous crime (seriously, look through my other entries, unless the name is actually important to the story, I won’t use it). The only time I use the name of a criminal is if they are an actual entry on my list, and that only happens when its an extraordinary story or the “criminal” isn’t really a criminal in my opinion. So anyway, there it is. I won’t name the people who should be forgotten, and I will name those that should be remembered.

324) Sonia Gandhi

Courtesy of Britannica

324: Sonia Gandhi

Former President of the Indian National Congress (Party)

Born: 9 December 1946, Lusiana, Italy

Original Name: Edvige Antonia Albina Maino

Sonia is the daughter-in-law of Indira Gandhi and declined the office of Prime Minister after her husband’s assassination—shocking the world, nearly all of whom expected her to accept the position.

Although she declined the position of Prime Minister many people saw her at the time as simply a queen appointing a regent to act in her place.

Sonia served as President of the Congress Party from 1998 to 2017. She has also served as Chairperson of the United Progressive Alliance since 2004.

When Sonia’s husband Rajiv was Prime Minister, Sonia preferred to stick to the background, studying art restoration and working to preserve India’s artistic treasures. Though she at first faced resistance because she was not Indian by birth, she quickly proved to the country she was Indian at heart, learning the language and customs and turning away from her Italian roots.

Rajiv was assassinated in 1991, and though Sonia at first refused to enter politics, by 1993 she was traveling the country campaigning on behalf of other members of the party. By 1998 she was head of her party and remained there until 2017, when she retired from her position as head of the party.

According to India Today, Sonia holds the record as longest serving President of the Indian National Congress Party.
