526) Sally Hemings

Courtesy of the Daily Mail

“Madison Hemings said very little about what his mother thought of his father, only that she “implicitly relied” on Jefferson’s promise. Hemings also said that he and his siblings “were the only children of [Jefferson’s] by a slave woman.”” -Courtesy of Monticello.org

526: Sally Hemings

Thomas Jefferson’s Not-So-Secret Mistress

Born: 1773, The Colony of Virginia (Present-day Virginia, United States of America)

Died: 1835, Charlottesville, Virginia, United States of America

Sally was a slave; the half-sister and ladies’ maid of Thomas Jefferson’s wife, Martha Wayles Jefferson.

While DNA has definitively proved a link between Sally’s known children and someone from the male Jefferson family line; nearly infallibly proving their relationship, some naysayers still deny and insist the children belong to Jefferson’s brother. The truth will not be definitely determined unless there are far superior advancements in DNA sequencing and identifying. However, it should be noted that since 1802, historical documents have appeared throughout our nation’s history claiming the relationship between Sally and Thomas was in fact real. Thomas himself never recognized Sally or her children as his family, and his white descendants went on to deny that a relationship between them ever produced children.

Little is known of Sally’s early life. She arrived at Monticello as part of an inheritance founding father Thomas Jefferson received upon the marriage of Sally’s half-sister Martha. From a young age, Sally acted as a nursemaid to her own niece; though that relationship would not be what it is today. Sally may have been Martha’s sister, but because she was Mulatto, and enslaved, she was not seen as part of the family in the way we view family relationships in the modern day.

In the 1780’s, Sally was chosen to go to Paris to act as a lady’s maid to Thomas’s daughter Maria. While there, she learned to speak French and was taught needlework. It is not known if Sally was able to read or write in either English or French. She was also inoculated against smallpox while there. According to Madison, Sally’s son, Thomas made Sally his concubine while in France (Madison also claimed to be Thomas’s son, alongside his other siblings).

Over the course of his life, Jefferson freed all of Sally’s children (that may have been his children [her daughters in the 1820’s and her sons in his Will]) and Sally herself was “considered” free as well (though not legally so) thanks to an agreement Sally had made with Jefferson at the age of sixteen, before she agreed to come back from France. Sally agreed to return to slavery in Virginia when Thomas went back there in exchange for “extraordinary privileges” for herself and any children she would have some day. These facts are confirmed by the official Monticello website, the historical home of Thomas Jefferson (linked below).

Thomas Jefferson did not free any other enslaved family unit in its entirety. Two of Sally’s children, Beverly and Harriet, left the plantation without ever being “legally” freed, however they were both able to “pass”; meaning they integrated into white society without ever being suspected of being part African American. In the 1830 census, Sally and her other two living children were listed as white. In 1833, Sally would claim to be a free-Mulatto. The location of her gravesite has been lost to history.

Eston and Madison, Sally’s sons, would claim throughout their life to be the sons of Thomas Jefferson. Madison chose to remain within the African American community, while Eston switched his racial identity to white and also changed his surname to Jefferson around the same time. Today, descendants of both Eston and Madison have been located. However, any descendants of Beverly and Harriet have been lost to history because they chose to pass into white society and eliminate any information leading back to where they came from.

There are no confirmed images of Sally Hemings from when she was alive; nor are there surviving images of her children. The image I have chosen to use here in this article is widely distributed across the internet and is very prevalent under the Sally Hemings search results on Google Images, but it is important to note that this is not actually an image of Sally from when she was alive. Therefore, we do not know what Sally looked like, or her skin color. She was undeniably part African, but if oral stories are correct, Sally’s mother was mixed race, as well as Sally herself, and this would definitely help her children pass into white society.

It is also important to remember that we cannot simply see Sally and Thomas’s relationship as a love story, or one of forced sex or rape. Slaves did not own their own bodies and were not able to say no to any of their master’s desires. For this reason, some believe Sally dealt with four decades of rape and abuse at the hands of Thomas Jefferson. However, others believe theirs was a love story that had to be hidden because of racial prejudices of the time. Just like with knowing the truth of Sally’s children’s father, we will also never know the truth behind her relationship with her master.

525) Mary Pearcey

Courtesy of Murderpedia

525: Mary Pearcey

Murderess

Born: 1866, London, United Kingdom

Died: 23 December 1890, London, United Kingdom

Original Name: Mary Eleanor Wheeler

Little is known of her early life, except that when Mary was fourteen her father was hanged for murdering a local farmer.

Mary used her first boyfriend’s last name (Pearcey) even after they broke up despite them never marrying.

She always dated wealthier men and never worked (or needed to) to survive. Mary was known to suffer from depression and drink heavily.

One of her boyfriends was married and had a daughter at the time they were together. Mary rectified this problem by slitting the wife’s throat and suffocating the baby; dumping their bodies in separate locations around London.

She was found guilty and sentenced to hang for the murders; however, Mary tried to get away with it by claiming insanity. After an hour-long examination, she was found to not be insane and her death penalty was reaffirmed.

After her death Madame Tussaud’s made a wax figure of her for their house of horrors.

Today, some consider Mary a candidate for the Jack the Ripper murders. However, it should be noted that all of the evidence is circumstantial and nothing concrete links Mary to the Whitechapel murders.

524: Santa Inocencia

Murdered Child and Mexican Saint Whose Corpse “Blinks” at Tourists

Also Known As: Saint Innocent

Inocencia was stabbed to death by her father after taking the Holy Communion to become a Catholic against his wishes. Her body has been certified as a relic and resides in the cathedral of Guadalajara in Mexico. In this version of the story it is said she was killed three hundred years ago.

Another version says she was killed by Roman Legionaries and laid to rest in the Roman Catacombs. When she was found in near perfect condition centuries later her body was sent to Mexico.

Today, Inocencia’s corpse is displayed in a glass box. Her body was coated in wax to preserve her, and she’s presented dressed in a white ceremonial gown. Whatever the true story of this young girl’s life, thousands flock to see her in Guadalajara every year.

A video appeared online in the mid 2010’s that supposedly shows her body opening its eyes to look at the camera and people have been arguing over whether or not it is fake ever since.

**It’s important to note that there are several Saint Innocents in the Catholic Religion, and to not get them confused.

523) Rosalia Lombardo

Courtesy of All That's Interesting

523: Rosalia Lombardo

Famous Child Mummy

Born: 1918, Palermo, Italy

Died: 6 December 1920, Palermo, Italy

Rosalia died when she was only two years old (probably from some form of bronchial infection) and her heartbroken father approached a noted doctor to preserve her body.

She was one of the last bodies placed in the Capuchin Catacombs in Palermo and until recently locals thought she had to be a doll because of how beautiful and lifelike she still looks. In fact, some people call her the world’s most beautiful mummy.

X-rays revealed her inner organs are also remarkably intact. To prevent any further decomposition, Rosalia now rests in a glass coffin saturated with nitrogen.

In certain videos, it seems as though Rosalia opens her eyes to look at the camera, but this is actually an optical illusion.

522: Sharon Tate

Actress Who is More Remembered Today for Being a Victim of the Manson Family

Born: 24 January 1943, Dallas, Texas, United States of America

Died: 9 August 1969, Los Angeles, California, United States of America

Sharon was stabbed to death while eight and a half months pregnant and her son died alongside her. At the time of her death, Sharon was married to Roman Polanski. Roman wasn’t home at the time his wife and son were murdered, but four other guests were, and they all died too.

She acted in film and television and was also a model. Sharon is remembered for appearing in projects like The Beverly Hillbillies, The Wrecking Crew, and Valley of the Dolls.

After Sharon’s murder, her mother Doris and her sisters began to fight for victim’s rights and to keep the Manson family behind bars. According to the official Sharon Tate website, “[Doris] was the first member of a victim's family to ever speak out [sic] a parole hearing and make a victims impact statement in the state of California.” Doris passed away in 1992, and Sharon’s sister Patti followed in 2000 from breast cancer. Debra, Sharon’s last surviving sister, continues to fight for victim’s rights and justice for the victims of the Manson Family.

In 2019, Sharon was portrayed by actress Margot Robbie in the film Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

521) Roza Shanina

"What I've actually done? No more than I have to as a Soviet man, having stood up to defend the motherland."

521: Roza Shanina

Soviet Sniper With 59 Confirmed Kills

Born: 3 April 1924, Yedma, Arkhangelsk Oblast, Soviet Union (Present-day Russia)

Died: 28 January 1945, Kaliningrad Oblast, Soviet Union (Present-day Russia)

Roza served during World War II.

Before enlisting she attended college and worked as a kindergarten teacher—learning to shoot on the range nearby.

Roza decided to enlist after one of her brothers was killed in the fighting.

She was known to the enemy as “The Unseen Terror of East Prussia”. Roza killed twelve enemy combatants in the battle of Vilnius alone, despite the fact that in the beginning of her service she was held back from the front lines due to the fact she was a woman.

By 1944, Roza became a commander of the all-female 1st sniper platoon of the Soviet 184th Rifle Division.

She was mortally wounded defending her already wounded artillery commander; a mortar shell tore open her abdomen and she died from her injuries soon after.

Roza was the first female Soviet sniper to be awarded the Order of Glory.

In 1965, her longtime friend and pen pal allowed her personal letters and diary to be published, letting Roza’s own words speak to what she had done in her short life.

520) Enriqueta Marti

520: Enriqueta Marti

Long Thought to be a Serial Killer of Children

Born: 2 February 1868, Municipality of Sant Feliu de Llobregat, Spain

Died: 12 May 1913, Barcelona, Spain

Full Name: Enriqueta Martí i Ripollés

Recent research, however, suggests she suffered from a mental disorder, and now the question of how many children she kidnapped and killed, and why, are starting to be investigated.

She had three nicknames: The Vampire of the Raval, the Vampire of Ponent Street, and the Vampire of Barcelona.

Enriqueta worked in the area of Raval in Barcelona first as a nanny before resorting to prostitution and as a “witch doctor”. It is said that she claimed to be able to cure diseases like tuberculosis through her potions made of the blood and flesh of her kidnapped and murdered child victims. It is also said she ran a brothel that specialized in handing child prostitutes to rich clientele. This went on for about twenty years before she was finally arrested (but never tried) for any of the crimes.

Enriqueta did spend fifteen months in prison before being beaten to death by other inmates.

Her case is very weird to study; the only website that seems to have anything nice to say about her is Wikipedia (I know) and their sources are mostly in Spanish (which I definitely do not read), but according to one author there weren’t ever any actual bodies found in her house (which contradicts every other website) and they also explain that her flat was full of blood because she was dying of uterine cancer (which is only mentioned one other place). Wikipedia also claims the bones found were from animals and not children (again, also not stated anywhere else.)

So, according to Wikipedia, Enriqueta is mostly innocent and undeserving of her serial killer title, but the real story may never really be known. A Vice article that interviews the author of a new book really makes it seem like there is no question Enriqueta was a serial killer. The author claims he interviewed many people who claimed their grandmothers were nearly victims of Enriqueta, and he has a photograph of the mob surrounding the car Enriqueta was placed in after her arrest.

519) Alexandra of Bavaria

Courtesy of Wikipedia

“I’m of a very delicate nature. And it is all made far more complicated due to the fact that I have a grand piano inside me… a grand piano would be bad enough but this one happens to be made out of glass,” -Princess Alexandra in “The Glass Piano”

519: Alexandra of Bavaria

Slightly Eccentric Princess

Born: 26 August 1826, Schloss Johannisburg, Aschaffenburg, Kingdom of Bavaria (Present-day Schloss Johannisburg, Aschaffenburg, Germany)

Died: 11 September 1875, Munich, Kingdom of Bavaria, (Present-day Munich, Germany)

Alexandra devoted her life to literature and believed that as a child she had swallowed a full-sized glass grand piano whole and any sudden movement would make it shatter inside of her.

Alexandra also might have had some form of OCD as she insisted on cleanliness and only wore white clothes. Part of her mental illness may have stemmed from the fact that she was the only child still living at home, unmarried, in the palace when her father, King Ludwig I, started bestowing lavish titles and gifts upon his mistress Lola Montez. Ludwig would eventually abdicate the throne over the affair.

Alexandra was an abbess at a religious community that only held noble ladies and never married or had children.

Alexandra wrote and translated many works during her life.

In 2019, a new play telling the story of Princess Alexandra debuted in London; it is called The Glass Piano.
